Queen's Pirates

In the 16th century, Queen Elizabeth I granted letters of marque to English pirates, called privateers, who shared their loot in exchange for protection and immunity.

Some, like Sir Francis Drake, Sir Walter Raleigh, and Sir Thomas Cavendish, even received knighthoods. Although they attacked Spanish ships and colonies laden with gold and silver from the New World and committed serious abuses, they were celebrated as heroes in England.
