REVIEW:
Rebel Patagonia is a testament to the virulent repression and massacre of workers at the hands of the army during the Patagonian strikes of 1921. It is, at the same time, a stark portrayal of human inequality that conclusively proves the logic of a perverse system in which southern landowners successfully pressured the Yrigoyen government and its army to annihilate the resistance of the rebellious workers. 'The Massacre' meticulously records the actions of the 10th Cavalry Regiment: the methods used by the infamous Lieutenant Varela to deceive and subdue the anarchist labor leaders, and the perverse complicity of the central political power with the landowners. Bayer constructs this reconstruction with testimonies from landowners, soldiers and officers involved, government officials, and the few laborers who managed to survive.
